night in police activity around watertown, massachusetts. this is a dramatic development, charlie, because this now opens up a lot of possible scenarios and it seems to indicate that this plot which for a while to us looked like perhaps a lone wolf domestic home grown-type plot. it may have been its origins overseas. once you open that can of worms, it could bring in any number of suspects throw all kinds of radical groups which john miller could tell you all about. charlie? >> bob orr, thank you. do we know anything about the organization they came from or whether they're associated with anybody? >> we don't. as bob said they're had military training and also through the
3:53 am
tactics they used overnight against the police. these are not amateurs when it comes to attacks. >> they said they were dropping explosives when they were being chased and that kind of thing. >> so let's go through the scenario if we can. last night what you have is the m.i.t. police respond to an incident of a specific person and these guys engage the officer. he's shot multiple times in the head. he's executed. there's gas station robbery that follows that. at the gas station there's a carjacking. the police are now in a chase with the car jacked vehicle with the two suspects inside in the chase. the suspects areng explosives ohe window of the speeding car. that ends at an intersection in watertown, so this chase is going on for a while. the suspects come out, engage the police in a fire fight, and they are throwing more explosives at that time. one of the suspects is killed there. the other one, the man we know as suspect number two in the
3:54 am
white baseball cap flees. from that point they go into a tactical mode going 20 blocks out in every direction from the white mercedes, the car they dumped after the carjacking. there's a possibility, charlie, that white baseball cap suspect number 2 gets a short distance, but they've got that 20-block perimeter. they're going street by street, house by house telling people to stay in their houses conducting those searches and listening very carefully to the calls coming in and sightings within that perimeter. they feel they have this individual locked down in there and they're going to search that perimeter until they either have him or can eliminate the fact that he's in there. >> and they assume he's within the perimeter as you suggest. >> they do. you know, this is unfolding very quickly. i always say this, so let me throw this marker down now. this information is moving quickly. it is likely to crystallize later.
3:55 am
tat basic chronology we hav inms of what happened last night and how itb >>you he anything to add to what bob said as to who they were, where they came from and how long they might have been planning this particular boston marathon assault? >> it appears they've been here a year. without getting into the specific country right now for a couple of reasons, both of them are from the balkans. it appears they have military training but the question is did that military training come from having been in some nation's military or is it more likely that they trained in one of the camps overseas that trains people in these tactics go up against their enemyies. >> let me go back to bob. bob? >> charlie, this is coming to me quickly but we have now confirmed through law enforcement sources that the two men involved are brothers.
3:56 am
one is 19 years old. one is 20 years old. and we have one name that's confirmed, and it's a little complicated but i believe it is zokar zarniff. let me spell it. it's t-s-a-r-n-a-e-v. we believe that these two brothers are legal permanent residents of the u.s. the last residence we have for him is cambridge, massachusetts. 19e yea old. we're told -- we don't know great deal but we're told they're not here as students. we don't know when they came here or what the condition of their legal status is right now but they were on no one's radar until the bombs went off the other day. we don't know if they ever came across these guys in any other
3:57 am
fashion. >> any other news that you heard this morning that they may have connection to anyone else here? anyone else may be part of their relationships? >> well, i think you have to worry about that now. i mean this was a plot that was so carefully conceived and so expertly carried out in terms of maintaining the secret it would seem to suggest that's a fairly small cell. at the same time, you know, anybody that's capable of doing that is also capable of having associates and co-conspirators. we don't know where they were prior to the bombing or where they were prior to servicing last night around m.i.t. and watertown but it's not a bad bet to tlifrpg's there's some kind of safe harbor for the one on the loose. he may be holed up somewhere. i think it's a pretty good bet he's not going anywhere by way of public transportation, buses, trains, or otherwise because his picture is now most known.
3:58 am
>> i don't want to getbe there a sense they're getting help? >> i don't think we know that. the bombs were fairly rudimentary. it could be constructed by two people. nothing in the evidence says they have to have help. we're talking now about somebody with training, tactical expertise. we know they have foreign connections just by place of birth so they may have connections somewhere. it's certainly an open question, charlie. >> nor why they staid in the area and what happened to them between the time of the bombing attack and last night's events. the investigation continues. one of the questions that always arises is what more do we know about their connection overseas. i asked john that earlier. any idea of what they might have -- who they might have been connected to. >> i'm going to give you the
3:59 am
honest answer. i really have no idea. i know now with the name they're be able to run that through a number of channels and they'll be looking at all the unusual suspects. they come from an area that frafrmgly has a lot of experience with terrorist groups and the chechnyan region has been notorious for years action you know charlie. there's a lot of suspects here and there's a chance it could get a lot bigger in terms of planning, conspirator, and plot. >> thank you very much, john miller. we'll have much more in just a moment on "cbs this morning." we go right now back to programming. >> announcer: : : ws
